Gastown....please don't ask why!

Saturday we arrived in Vancouver from Victoria.  Our travel day was a full day and took a while to get to our hotel which is located near the waterfront. From Schwartz Bay in Victoria, we took an hour and a half ferry to the Port of Tsawwassen in southern Vancouver. Beautiful ride...I highly recommend taking the ferry if you can.  From the port we then transferred to a city bus #620 Express to the Bridgeport bus terminal.  We went up the elevator, and got on the Skytrain going north to the Waterfront station.  The land part of this journey cost only $2.50 each and took almost an hour.  From the waterfront station it was a bit of a walk for us and we arrived in our hotel happy but tired.  There was a restaurant called "Rosie's" right next door and the dinner we had there was very delicious....followed by bed shortly there after.

We began our visit of Vancouver the next morning by first going the wrong way?  It happens.  But because of that, we found a Cineplex, the BC Place Stadium, the Rogers Arena (where in a perfect world there may have been a hockey game to watch), Chinatown, and a Starbucks.
Back on track we headed to Gastown.  One of the oldest areas in Vancouver.  It was all built around a saloon owned by "Gassy" Jack Deighton and opened in 1867.

Cobblestone streets and restored 19th century buildings are the charmers here.  Many shops from highend to tourist souveniers.

You can also see gas lamps, that line the streets in Gastown.
This triangular building was built in 1907 and is reminiscent of the New York's Flat-iron building.  It also reminds me of the building near the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto.  It is an apartment building.....I think it would be a totally cool place to live.

Don't stand too close Debbie....we don't know why he was called "Gassy."  I'm just saying!!

My thinking was that while I was travelling on the West coast, a nice pair of dress boots would be a great souvenier from this trip.  However, this store had a ton of beautiful, leather cowboy boots they started at $300.

This character will shot you if you steal from the boot shop???

This is one of the oldest clocks that run on steam.  Every 15 minutes it plays music and the pipes on the top, discharge steam in time to the music. It was built in the 1870's.

Of course we waited to see it "let off some steam."

This tall building is called the Harbour Tower Center.  It is a luxury apartment building with great views of the water.  But more exciting to us was that at the top, is a "Look out,"  a 360' observation tower that is 550 feet high!
The elevator to go up has a glass front and it is a wickedly fast zip straight up to the top.
